Students visit the libraries to read or browse for books, use a computer, work on a class project or homework, visit with friends, or play board games.  The computers in the Library Media Centers are available to all students.  They may use the online school library catalog, educational web sites and CD-ROMS, as well as take an Accelerated Reader quiz, or utilize various software programs. For teaching purposes, the computer screen can be viewed and referenced on a digital monitor or projection screen in the library for extended learning and interactive activities.

Every elementary student comes to the library once a week to check out and return books, and to enjoy a read-aloud story or short activity. Library lessons and activities are designed to implement the Library and Information Literacy Standards of the California School Library Association, as well as to support Language Arts Curricular Standards. In addition, teachers may schedule extended blocks of time for research assignments on an as needed basis.

A more flexible, open library schedule at the middle school level allows teachers to bring classes to the library for extended blocks of time to research topics for class assignments.  Guidance and assistance are provided in the use of the reference and nonfiction collections and pertinent Internet sites. The library staff works with students and teachers in utilizing their library time effectively when researching topics, and in documenting sources used during the research process.

The elementary libraries sponsor a variety of activities to promote reading and learning. Examples of these events include reading challenge activities, Poem in Your Pocket Day, a Celebrity Read Aloud Day, an author visit, or special school wide reading celebrations.   With more flexibility during the day, the middle school libraries are used by students and teachers on a more individualized basis to meet the varied and unique needs of these grade levels.

The libraries feature a large selection of fiction, nonfiction and reference books geared to the wide range of interests and reading abilities of our student population. Library resources are carefully selected to enrich and extend subjects that are being taught in the classroom, and to promote recreational reading throughout a wide range of genre selections.
