Curriculum and Instruction

Rosedale Union School District has a comprehensive core curriculum with high expectations for all students. Curriculum is a word that often means different things to different people. The District defines it here as the board-adopted sequential list of what students are expected to know or be able to do by subject and skill area at the conclusion of an individual grade, cluster of grades, or upon graduation. The written core curriculum for our District is the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) adopted by the State of California in August, 2010 and modified in January, 2013 “…to maintain California’s high expectations for students.” (California Department of Education)  The CCSS standards are an updated set of academic standards that have been developed with the intention of unifying learning expectations across the United States. Teachers use the CCSS and results from District Unit Assessments in addition to District Curriculum Guides to assist them to align their instructional program with the CCSS.

Rosedale has adopted state-approved textbooks in all four core curricular areas. Supplementary materials are also provided and used in classrooms to support the core curriculum that includes English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and History-Social Science. Physical Education and the Fine Arts are also included within the instructional day.

Rosedale students in grades three through eight participate in statewide assessments in English-Language Arts and Mathematics administered through the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).  CAASPP testing is administered during a twelve-week window in the spring of each year.  CAASPP is a computer adaptive test that adjusts the difficulty of questions during the assessment depending upon student responses.  The test is therefore tailored to each individual student to identify the mastery level of the individual student.  This process will provide the most accurate score for each student.  For more information, please go to Smarter Balanced Website.

Rosedale teachers are highly skilled, dedicated professionals with a focus on the education of all children. They seek to improve their skills through District offered professional development, conferences/workshops, and continuing education courses. Teachers also serve on various District level curriculum committees.
